Jerry Matthews Natural Course Design of Lansing, the state's most prominent golf course design firm, was called upon to create a course on what was "One of the flattest sites I've seen during my 40 years in business," states renowned architect, Jerry Matthews. The challenge was to create an interesting and memorable course out of a plain site.

Matthews collaborated with his associate, Denny Spencer, on the design and asked him to lead the design project. As a five-year veteran of the Senior PGA Tour, Spencer brought a special perspective to the project. Close to 1,000,000 cubic yards of dirt were moved to create target definition, both off the tees and into the greens. One of our goals Spencer said, "Was to try to create golf holes that look much more difficult than it actually plays." We want our golfers to be challenged and yet give them far greater chances for success than it may first appear. Gateway is an upscale public golf facility with private club conditions. Gateway is a championship style layout that measures just over 6,842 yards with forgiving bentgrass fairways and large greens. Gateway's four sets of tees on each hole allows for maximum challenge and enjoyment for golfers of all skill levels.
